| 1983 When GLATTON
GRANGE became its first winner, having run through the event unbeaten
(29.10,28.82,28.66,28.68) the Dillys Steel owned and Ken Linzell trained
33.7kg brindle dog by MULCAIL- ROCKET x PENCIL SLIM picked up a cheque
for £7,000 and a trophy. Through out the event GLATTON GRANGE used
his early pace and was never in trouble. In the final despite being the
second youngest GLATTON GRANGE soon led at the first bend and galloped
on to resist the strong challenge of the Jan 81 TRINAS SAMURAI by ¾l
in 28.68.
Just two months earlier GLATTON GRANGE was considered a little immature
when he took his chance in the English Derby, and was a 16-1 shot when
second to HAY MAKER MAC in the first round and was baulked unp1aced behind
GRACIOUS in a very hot second round heat. This experience showed when
he went back to racing against dogs of his own age.
Mr. T Hillman owner-breeder of the runner-up TRINAS SAMURAI collected
a cheque for £1850 plus £1000 prize for the most successful
greyhound entered at the litter stage. TRINAS SAMURAI was well fancied
for the Western Produce Stakes at Bristol, but went out in the heats after
clocking the fastest time of the event.
Amongst the first round non-qualifiers was BALLYJOHN LAD winner of that
year’s Western Produce Stakes at Bristol.
