1987 The kennels of Nick Savva and Geoff De Mulder were again strongly represented in the 1987 Produce Stakes. Both kennels had high hopes of winning the first prize of £10,000. WESTMEAD GOLD was the main hope of Savva, while Bristol Produce winner FEARLESS ACE was the De Mulder main fancy. The first round saw some very fast times, but the fastest was the 28.34 by FEARLESS ACE (1/7). 28.60 was recorded by WESTMEAD GOLD and the litter brothers ABLE SAM, and ABLE GEOFF . The second round saw wins for WESTMEAD GOLD, ABLE SAM and
ABLE GEOFF and the fourth heat was won by FEARLESS STAR litter brother
to FEARLESS ACE who could only finish second when 2/7 behind WESTMEAD
GOLD. The final was made up of three sets of litter mates and
despite being the only unbeaten finalist ABLE SAM (28.60, 28.47, 28.71),
was made 5/2 second favourite from trap two in a field of five wide runners,
with WESTMEAD GOLD 1/2 fav expected to get a solo from trap 1. ABLE SAM
saved his best start for this race and was soon clear and had two lengths
to spare at the finish from WESTMEAD CHANGE with ABLE GEOFF back in third
place. The Consolation Stakes was won by FEARLESS ACE (MT. KEEFE
ST AR x SARAHS BUNNY) 1/4 fav in 28.25 just three spots outside the track
record held by YANKEE EXPRESS. Although he failed to win the Produce Stakes
FEARLESS ACE won the Bristol Produce Stakes, and would later win the Trafalgar
Cup (87) and the Pall Mall (88, 89).
